Locations: UCSC Arboretum | Tuesdays (open Roster) & Wednesdays
Huddart Park | Thursdays & Fridays Felton | Friday foxtracks
Youth begin to explore the natural world in a small group, independent of their parent, under the guidance of a naturalist. We begin to go deeper into the core routines of nature awareness. Students learn to go to their sit spot independently, keep a journal, & explore the landscape with a larger home range. We also play a lot of games and they use their hands for a variety of "wild crafting" projects. We introduce a wide variety of learning topics as the youth begin to explore their personal interests in nature.
youth must have competency with the 3p's to enter the newts:
Parent Independence - Parents are not a part of this program. Rather they participate in a 2-3 week fledgling period at the beginning of the youth's time with this group. During this period the parent can accompany or "orbit" the child. If after this time the child is still not parent independent, they may rejoin the nest to fledge group and try again later with the NEWTS.
Pack - Youth must be able to carry and pack their own day packs.
Pee/Poop - Youth must have experience going on their own, including comfort with occasionally doing this in the woods.
